Racing a fleet, and replaying it
Create a race, share its join code, and everyone records their own sail on their own device. Afterwards each boat uploads its track and the whole fleet replays together on one map — who went where, who gained on which leg, and how the leaders’ first beat differed from yours.
Running a fleet race
Create the race
Set it up with its marks and start line as you would for yourself.
Share the join code
Send the code, or the link it generates. A sailstats.com race link opens straight into the join screen on a device that has the app.
Everyone records their own sail
Each boat presses record on its own device. No one needs instruments — a phone GPS contributes a perfectly good track.
Everyone uploads afterwards
Back ashore, each boat uploads its track to the race. Nothing is transmitted during the racing.
Replay the fleet
Watch every boat move together on one map, and scrub back to whichever moment you are arguing about.
Does everyone need the app?
Everyone whose track you want to see, yes — each boat records its own. They do not need instruments, and they do not need an account. It is free, so the ask is genuinely just “download this and press record”, which is about the lowest bar you can set for a club fleet.
Is anything transmitted while we are racing?
No. This is post-race replay, not live tracking. Each boat records locally, and tracks are uploaded afterwards when someone chooses to upload them. Nothing leaves anyone’s device during the race — which also means it works perfectly well out of cell range.
What can I actually learn from a replay?
- Where the fleet went — whether the boats that beat you went right or left, and whether that was the same on every beat.
- Where you gained and lost — leg by leg, rather than as a single finishing position.
- The first beat — usually where the race was decided, and the hardest thing to reconstruct from memory.
- Roundings — how much a wide mark rounding actually cost, in boat lengths and in seconds.
Can I race myself instead?
Yes. Time-trial mode compares runs recorded on different days against the same course, which is the version of this that works when the only boat available to race is your own. Useful for testing a new sail, or for seeing whether a winter of practice showed up.
Do I need an account?
No. Fleet races work fully without one. Sign in with Apple is optional and does exactly one thing: ties your shared races to you rather than to a device, so a replacement phone picks them up again. If you use it we receive an email address — a private relay alias if you hide yours — and nothing else.
What happens to the data afterwards?
Uploaded tracks live in the race so the fleet can replay it. You can delete everything you have ever put in the cloud from inside the app at any time, under Settings → Privacy & Data → Delete Account & Cloud Data. The privacy policy has the detail of what is kept and for how long.
