Connect SailStats to your boat

SailStats reads standard NMEA 0183 data over your boat's Wi-Fi. Some chartplotters can send that directly; many cannot, and need a small gateway on the instrument network. This page says which is which.

Two things worth knowing before you start.
1. SailStats can only show wind, depth and other instrument data that your boat actually measures and sends over Wi-Fi. Without any of it you'll still get GPS position, speed and course.
2. You don't need any of this to start. SailStats records position, speed over ground and course from your device's own GPS, with no hardware at all.

Models marked tested have been verified on a real boat. Everything else is listed on the manufacturer's published behaviour and should work, but we haven't personally confirmed it — if you try one, please tell us and we'll update this page.

Setting it up

B&G, Simrad and Lowrance displays

If you sail behind a B&G, there's a fuller walk-through with what you get afterwards on the SailStats for B&G owners page.

  1. On the display, open Settings → Connectivity (older firmware calls this Network or Wireless).
  2. Turn on its Wi-Fi hotspot, or join the display to the boat's existing Wi-Fi. Note the hotspot name and password — on a Zeus S you set both here.
  3. Join your device to that Wi-Fi network.
  4. Find the display's IP address. On a Zeus S it's under Settings → Boat network → Ethernet; on other firmware it may sit under Network or beside the NMEA 0183 settings. It typically looks like 172.22.x.x and can change between sessions.
  5. If your firmware lists NMEA 0183 output as something you can switch on, enable it. Many current displays stream it by default and show no such setting — that's normal, not a problem.
  6. In SailStats: Settings → Connection, enter that IP address, tap Connect.

Don't go looking for a port number. Most Navico displays never show one — they stream on 10110, which is what SailStats already has filled in. Only change it if your display explicitly tells you a different port.

NMEA Wi-Fi gateways

  1. Fit the gateway to the NMEA 2000 backbone (or the NMEA 0183 wiring, depending on model).
  2. Join its Wi-Fi network, or point it at the boat's network.
  3. Open its configuration page and find the NMEA 0183 data server. Note the port, and make sure it is set to TCP — see the note below.
  4. Enter that address and port in SailStats.
SailStats connects over TCP. Most gateways can serve NMEA 0183 as either a TCP server or a UDP broadcast, and several ship with UDP on by default — which is the single most common reason a gateway looks connected but sends nothing. In the gateway's own settings, enable a TCP server (sometimes called "NMEA server", "TCP/IP server" or "server mode") and point SailStats at that port. Being joined to the gateway's Wi-Fi does not by itself mean data is arriving.

Garmin, Raymarine and Furuno displays

The Wi-Fi built into most of these is for the manufacturer's own app, chart updates and screen mirroring — not a general NMEA feed for other apps. Add an NMEA 2000 Wi-Fi gateway to the boat's backbone and connect SailStats to that instead. The plotter carries on working exactly as before.

Raymarine SeaTalkNG networks may need the correct SeaTalkNG-to-DeviceNet adapter — the connectors are not interchangeable.

No instruments at all

SailStats works on its own. Your device's GPS gives position, speed over ground and course over ground, which is enough for tracks, start-line timing, race replay and most speed analysis. Wind, depth, boat speed and a proper compass heading are what the boat's instruments add.
